World's Largest Trial of Intensive Glucose Control in Type 2 Diabetes

(Market Wire via Comtex) The world's largest diabetes trial has shown intensive blood glucose control in type 2 diabetes reduces the risk of complications — notably a 21% reduction in risk for kidney disease. The study also showed no evidence of any increased risk of death when blood glucose was intensively controlled, according to reports presented at the American Diabetes Association's 68th Annual Scientific Sessions.

Up to 40 percent of people with OSA, a common breathing disorder, also have diabetes, recent studies suggest. Likewise, more than half of the people with type 2 diabetes suffer from some form of sleep disorder. Another recent study suggests treating OSA with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) improves insulin sensitivity in non-obese people.

Men And Women May Metabolize Fructose Differently

(Reuters Health) Men and women appear to differ in how they metabolize high levels of fructose, a simple sugar commonly used to sweeten drinks and foods. Short-term high fructose intake among young men resulted in increased blood triglycerides (fats) and decreased insulin resistance, factors associated with an elevated risk for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, report Dr. Luc Tappy and colleagues.

Mediterranean Diet Can Protect Against Diabetes

Strict adherence to a traditional Mediterranean diet yielded an 83% relative reduction in the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, a prospective study found. Even moderate adherence was associated with a 59% relative reduction in diabetes risk, Miguel Martínez-González, M.D., Ph.D., of the University of Navarra here, and colleagues reported online in BMJ. Many studies have shown that the Mediterranean diet has a protective role in cardiovascular disease, but little is known about its role in preventing diabetes in healthy people, the researchers said.
