Overweight kids may show a number of risk factors for heart disease by the time they are teens. Researchers found that overweight and obese 8-year-olds were seven-times more likely than their thinner peers to have multiple heart disease risk factors at the age of 15. These risks included high blood pressure, unhealthy cholesterol levels and high blood glucose. Along with obesity, all of these problems are components of metabolic syndrome, which in turn raises the long-term risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

In people with type 2 diabetes, the combination of two anti-diabetes drugs -- sitagliptin and metformin -- improves blood glucose control in a synergistic fashion, a study shows.
