April 2005: Collaborative Learning Network

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Diabetes Initiative held it's fifth Collaborative Learning Network (CLN) Meeting in St. Louis, MO on April 6 -7, 2005. In attendance were the Diabetes Initiative Grantees, Program Staff, RTI International Evaluation Staff, and invited speakers. This CLN focused on a variety of topics including physical activity, dissemination/ sustainability, ongoing follow up and support, and emotional health. Grantees from Richland County Health Department, Galveston County Health District, and Department of Family and Community Health/Marshall University School of Medicine gave In the Spotlight presentations.

October 2005: Third Annual RWJF Diabetes Initiative Meeting

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Diabetes Initiative held its 3rd Annual Meeting entitled "Self Management: Sailing to Success" in Providence, RI on October 18-20, 2005. Invited speaker Beverly Schwartz from Ashoka provided a lively presentation on the topic of using strategic communication methods to disseminate grantee program findings, Representative Sean Faircloth (Bangor, ME) discussed the usefulness of such program findings to effect policy, and National Advisory Committee (NAC) member Russell Glasgow lead a discussion and group exercise on program sustainability. Promotion of non-smoking as a central component of diabetes management was the focus of a presentation by Ed Fisher, National Program Office Director. Kelly Nevins from the Volunteer Center of Rhode Island responded to grantee feedback for information on supervising and working with volunteers. Ronald Aubert, MedcoHealth Solutions and NAC chairman led an informative discussion about Medicare. The meeting also provided perspectives from the diabetes national scene: Christopher Laxton and Malinda Peeples,  American Association of Diabetes Educators; Dara Murphy, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; Ann Albright, California Diabetes Program, University of California, San Francisco; and Anne Weiss, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. In the spotlight, were grantees from Community Health Center, Middletown, CT; Montana-Wyoming Tribal Leaders Council, Billings, MT; and Open Door Health Center, Homestead, FL, who had the opportunity to present their programs to the grantees. All grantees also displayed and shared their work during a poster viewing and networking session on the evening of October 18th. In attendance were Diabetes Initiative Grantees, National Program Office Staff, RWJF Program Staff, RTI International External Evaluation staff, National Advisory Committee members, and invited experts.
